Naib was one of the members of the justice system in the Ottoman Empire, as vice-Kadı and agent of Kadı. He was appointed by Kadı and this appointment was approved by Anadolu or Rumeli Kadıaskeri. In this context, a lot of naibs served in Nicosia Kadıs Court and Ebubekir Necib Efendi was one of them. He lived in the second half of the eighteenth century and in the early years of the nineteenth century. This study examines Ebubekir Necib Efendis life and evaluates the formal activities of a naib in Cyprus in the early nineteenth century.
