Wars are shaped according to the superiorities or inadequacies experienced in the war zone and behind the front. It is known that logistics affect the fate of battles at least as much as the number of soldiers and the availability of ammunition. Even some fronts, where logistics cannot be provided, fall without encountering enemy armies. In the First World War, the Ottoman state created many service units that are committed behind the front needs, such as labour and porter battalions, to carry out the logistics and supply activities of the Army, based on the importance of the situation. Although these battalions are not like armed infantry, they have made a serious contribution to the logistics of the army with the work tools they have and the tens of pounds of weight they carry on their backs. The support of the porter’s battalions ensured that the fighting on the front line continued without a hitch and prevented the elimination.

Savaşlar; harp sahası ve gerisinde yaşanılan üstünlük ya da yetersizlikler doğrultusunda şekillenmektedir. Lojistiğin en az asker sayısı ve cephane durumu kadar savaşların kaderini etkilediği, hatta lojistiğin sağlanamadığı bazı cephelerin düşman ordularıyla karşılaşmadan düştüğü bilinmektedir. Osmanlı Devleti, durumun önemine binaen Birinci Cihan Harbinde ordunun lojistik ve iaşe faaliyetlerini yürütmek üzere amele ve hamal taburları gibi birçok geri hizmet birliği oluşturmuştur. Bu taburlar, silahlı birer nefer gibi olmasa da ellerindeki iş aletleri ve sırtlarında taşıdıkları onlarca kiloluk ağırlıklarla ordunun lojistiğine ciddi katkı sağlamışlardır. Hamal taburlarının desteği cephe hattındaki mücadelenin aksamadan devam etmesini ve elim hadiselerin önüne geçilmesini sağlamıştır.
