19. Yüzyılda Selanik´in Gölgesinde Bir Liman Şehri: Kavala

A Port City in the Shade of Salonica in 19th Century: Cavalla

19th century was a period in which rapid changes were taken place in the world as well as in the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman Society had participated in this transition period with its various reactions shaped according to their own internal dynamics. The main objective of this study to explore and compare the characteristics and the velocity of economic and social changes in the second half of 19th century of Cavalla located in the hinterland of Salonika which was a significant metropolis and port of the region of Ottoman Macedonia with the very same elements of Salonika. Moreover, social and economic relations of Cavalla with Drama located in the hinterland of Cavalla are also going to be touched upon. Instead of Salonika example a cosmopolitan city which enables us to see many aspects of the affects of the transition, no doubt examining a port city like Cavalla a more marginal one which was able to establish much more stable relations with its hinterland and more sincere with its reaction towards the changes will contribute the literature to a great extend.

Keywords: Transition Period, Salonica, Cavalla, Drama, Port City.
