An "İrtica" Movement in the Shadow of May 27: Turkish Azan

Translation of the word "worship" into Turkish and more specifically the subject of Turkish Azan had been busy the the country´s agenda frequently during the constitutional period, II. After the proclamation of the Republic, within the change and transformation made on the basis of westernization this isuue was discussed in this regard and the Azan had been read in Turkish between 1932-1950. By the rule of Democrat Party a turn had been made. While this turn had been described by some groups as an objection to Atatürk's reforms, this characterization had been shared by the some military coup members after May 27, 1960, and thus the demands for Turkish Azan had come up again. The press had organized serious campaigns in favor of this demand that had voiced loudly by the leader of the National Union Committee, Cemal Gürsel and in the shadow of the military coup, the public had been tried to be won. However, when it was understood that the majority of the people did not have a request for this demand, the issue had been put on the shelf to bring it into the agenda for another time.
