Turkish War Correspondents Who Served in Edirne in The Balkan Wars

The Balkan Wars, as well as being one of the most important turning points in Turkish history in military, political, social and ideological terms, have a similar importance for the history of Eastern Europe. In addition, the Balkan Wars stand out as a milestone with different reasons and dynamics in the national historiography of both the Ottoman Empire and the allied states consisting of Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Montenegro. Therefore, the Balkan Wars, which has a very comprehensive literature created by world historiography, especially in Europe, has become a multi-faceted and interdisciplinary field of study. However, while the public opinion and press dimensions of the war are relatively in the background in the literature in question, it is understood that the war correspondents, whose first examples were seen in this period, were not the subject of almost any study. While claiming that the Balkan Wars was an important turning point in the emergence of war correspondence in the Ottoman press, this study deals with the activities of the war correspondents assigned in Edirne by the leading newspapers of the period such as Tanin, İkdam, Sabah and Tasvir-i Efkâr, and thus both the Balkan Wars and the Balkan Wars. It also aims to make a modest contribution to the Ottoman press history literature.

Keywords: Balkan Wars, Edirne, Ottoman press, war correspondents, headquarters reporters, telegram, letter.
