Looking at the War of 93 through A Steamship: Mersin Steamship Case and the Ottoman War Prisoners in Russia

The Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-78 has been studied in many ways. However, the part of the maritime logistics that affected the war was not adequately explored. In this regards, this study addresses the abduction story of the Mersin steamship, which was abducted by Russian steamship and contains important war plans and a large number of injured Ottoman soldiers. This incident, which influenced the war, took place as an important event in Russian historiography as well as in the drawings of famous Russian painters. Although the Black Sea was under blockade by the Ottoman ships during the war, the seizure of the Mersin steamship, without encountering any obstacles, led to heated discussions in the Ottoman Parliament. In this respect, the story of the abduction of an Ottoman steamship, which was seized in the wake of a complex network of relations, was tried to be dealt with both by Ottoman and Russian sources.
