Turkish Private Schools in İzmir According to the Statistics of 1925-1926 and 1926-1927 Academic Years as Provided by the Magazine of Statistics

During the modernization of Ottoman education, in addition to the schools opened by the state itself, private enterprises were also included. Within this framework, primary and secondary schools have started to be opened in cities such as in İstanbul, İzmir and Bursa by wealthy individuals who keep education in high regard. These schools have been popular among the public. In İzmir, which is one of these cities, many schools opened have taken their place in our educational history. İzmir's first Turkish private school was Mekteb-i Terakki, which was established in 1886. Existing schools, for various reasons, did not make it to the Republican period, but some were able to survive. According to the statistics of Magazine of Statistics of the Board of Education, Ravza-i İrfan, Darül’l-İrfan, Şemsü’l-Maarif ve Orhaniye private schools in İzmir continued their education activities after the Republic was established. The aim of this study is to reveal the short history of the four aforementioned schools in Izmir, their general characteristics, license and building information, libraries and fixtures, number of teachers, their qualifications, salaries they receive, the status of the students in these schools and the income and expense status of the schools, for the academic years of 1925-1926 and 1926-1927 according to the statistics obtained from The Magazine of Statistics of the Board of Education. The aim of this study is to reveal the short history of the four aforementioned schools in Izmir, their general characteristics, license and building information, libraries and fixtures, number of teachers, their qualifications, salaries they receive, the status of the students in these schools and the income and expense status of the schools, for the academic years of 1925-1926 and 1926-1927 according to the statistics obtained from The Magazine of Statistics of the Board of Education.

Osmanlı eğitiminin modernleşmesi döneminde devletin kendi açtığı okulların yanında özel teşebbüslere de yer verilmiştir. Bu çerçevede İstanbul, İzmir, Bursa gibi şehirlerde varlıklı ve eğitim konusuna önem kişiler tarafından özellikle ilk ve orta okullar açılmaya başlanmıştır. Bu okullar halk tarafından rağbet görmüştür. Bu şehirler arasında İzmir’de açılmış olan pek çok okul eğitim tarihimizde yerini almıştır. İzmir’in ilk Türk özel okulu 1886 yılında faaliyete geçen Mekteb-i Terakki’dir. Mevcut okullar çeşitli sebeplerden ötürü Cumhuriyet dönemine gelememekle beraber bazıları yeni dönemde de devam edebilmiştir. Maarif Vekâleti İhsaiyat Mecmuası istatistiklerine göre İzmir’de Ravza-i İrfan, Darül’l-İrfan, Şemsü’l-Maarif ve Orhaniye adlı özel okulların Cumhuriyet sonrasında da eğitim faaliyetine devam ettiğini belirtmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı 1925-1926 ve 1926-1927 yılllarında İhsaiyat Mecmuası istatistiklerine göre İzmir’deki bu dört okulun kısa tarihçeleri, okulların genel özellikleri, ruhsat ve bina bilgileri, kütüphane ve demirbaş bilgileri, öğretmenlerin sayısı, nitelikleri, aldıkları maaşlar, okuldaki öğrencilerin durumu, okulun gelir ve giderlerini ortaya koymaktır. Bu çalışmanın amacı 1925-1926 ve 1926-1927 yılllarında İhsaiyat Mecmuası istatistiklerine göre İzmir’deki bu dört okulun kısa tarihçeleri, okulların genel özellikleri, ruhsat ve bina bilgileri, kütüphane ve demirbaş bilgileri, öğretmenlerin sayısı, nitelikleri, aldıkları maaşlar, okuldaki öğrencilerin durumu, okulun gelir ve giderlerini ortaya koymaktır.
