The Social and Economic Structure of Beyşehir Lake (Karalis) in The Roman Period

Beyşehir Lake that its ancient name is Karalis, is surrounded by highly productive land, especially Killanion Plain and Orondeis country. As a result of Publius Servilius Vatia's campaign against bandits in the inner parts of the Taurus The fertile land in the eastern part of Beyşehir Lake was made ager publicus as public land. During the campaign of Servilius by Cicero, it was mentioned that ager Agerensis and ager Gedusanus converted into public land. Their precise localities have not been made but they were called together with lands as ager publicus, can not be far away to Beyşehir Lake. It is understood from both the ancient literary sources and the epigraphical documents that the region is not homogeneous in terms of demographic and religious and cultural aspects. As the names of the sub-regions in the region also point to the peoples of different ethnically different origins, the inscriptions found here also include the names of Thrak and Persian. It is understood that some of the inscriptions were worshiped by different gods in the region and the existence of an imperial cult in Pappa-Tiberiopolis. The Killanion Pedion (Cillanion Tractus) in the north and the tractus Orondicus in the east of Lake Beyşehir are rich in water resources and extremely convenient plains for agricultural production. Since Augustus, empire manor and private manor were established in this environment. The safety of these rural areas, which are of great economic importance for Rome as well as politically, provided by stationarians, paraphylakes, eirenarkhes and horophylakes that known from epigraphic documents.
