Thoughts on The Designation and Location

The town Ruschuk, whose history, according to archeological findings, dates back to the period B.C., is located in the southern coast of the river Danube, where it converges with the tributary Lom. Starting with the reign of the Roman Emperor Traian (98-117, A.D.) the town can be better described, during which it is labelled under different names in historical documents and materials. Different designations in Turkish and Bulgarian of the town have naturally given rise to the disscussions as to where these designations originated from and whether the area of settlement were exposed to dislocations. Read as Sexaginta Pristis, Pristapolis, Prista, Yürük Ovası, Yergöğü Beriyaka, Malko Yurgovo, Urus, Urusçuk, Rusi-to, Rusiko, Rostzig, Russy, Rusi, Rosi, Ruse, and Rusçuk in the documents, the town under Ottoman rule was transformed into an important garrison town and developed into a commercial center, where the first railway line of the Ottoman Empire was railed.

Rusçuk Şehrinin Yeri ve Adı Üzerine Düşünceler

Tarihi geçmişi arkeolojik buluntulara göre (M.Ö)´ye kadar uzanan Rusçuk Şehri günümüzde Tuna Nehri´nin güney sahilinde ve Lom (Kara Lom) Nehri´nin Tuna ile birleştiği yerdedir. Roma İmparatoru Trayan (M.S. 98-117) döneminden itibaren geçmişi hakkında daha fazla bilgiye sahip olduğumuz şehir, tarihi materyal ve belgelerde çok değişik adlarla anılmıştır. Bu durum Türkçe Rusçuk, Bulgarca Ruse şeklinde yazılan ismin nereden geldiği ve yerleşim alanının değişip değişmediği tartışmalarını beraberinde getirmiştir. Kaynaklarda Sexaginta Pristis, Pristapolis, Prista, Yürük Ovası, Yergöğü Beriyaka, Malko Yurgovo, Urus, Urusçuk, Rusi-to, Rusiko, Rostzig, Russy, Rusi, Rosi, Ruse, Rusçuk isimleriyle karşımıza çıkan şehir, Osmanlı Dönemi´nde mühim bir kale-şehir ve hatta Osmanlı coğrafyasının ilk demiryoluna sahip bir ticaret merkezine dönüşmüştür.

Anahtar Kelimeler: Bulgaristan, Tuna Nehri, Tuna Vilayeti, Rusçuk, Ruse.
