The Place and Importance of Local Publications in Local History Research: Trabzon Example

The difference between history and the past is consciousness. If a person perceives and makes sense of the past, it turns into history. This perception and interpretation process is done in two ways. The first is amateurish. It is in the form of transferring without questioning, analyzing resources and evaluating. The second method is done in line with scientific principles, that is, within the framework of methodology. This is academic historiography. Academic historiography dealt with general history almost until the mid-20th century. The local history, which can be called the history next to us, is mostly left to amateur historians and even history lovers. In our country, urban historiography, which started in the second half of the 19th century, has spread over time. While writing their history, cities with identity and cultural richness came to the fore. Trabzon is one of these cities. The adventure of Trabzon history writing, which started in 1877, continued in an institutional framework with the Community Centers during the Republic period. This corporate movement gained a new vision with the establishment of Serander Publishing House in 1998. Two things were targeted with the publishing house founded by Veysel Usta and Kenan Sarıalioğlu. On the one hand, a strong emphasis was placed on the potential of Trabzon to become the cultural center of the Black Sea. On the other hand, it was aimed to carry out scientific researches that reveal Trabzon's potential in terms of history, tourism, social, cultural and artistic aspects. While this study reveals the history of local history research in the Trabzon example, it also draws attention to the success of corporate publishing through Serander Publishing House.
