General F.S. Maude´s Baghdad Campaign

Frederick Stanley Maude (1864-1917) has recognized by the English for his role in turning around the fortunes of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Major General Maude, was taken the command of a Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force in late August 1916, replacing Lieutenant General Sir Percy Lake and this duty gave him the temporary rank and position of a Lieutenant General. In this period, the English policy in Mesopotamia was defensive. He trained and organized his army in a short time . At the same time, the Ottoman Sixth Army under the command of Halil (Kut) Pasha was growing weaker. The Ottoman General Staff ignored the British preparations during the seven months following the recapture of Kut on 29 April 1916. This staff also neglected to make adequate preparations to resist a renewed British offensive and reduce the forces on the Tigris by the advice of Germans in order to advance into Persia. By the early days of December, the period of preparation was virtually at an end. Maude's offensive was launched on 12 December 1916. As to the English forces advancing up the Tigris, The Ottoman forces under the command of Colonel Kâzım (General Karabekir) XVIII. Army Corps, put through a great performance and heroism. But the troops under the command of General Maude recaptured Sannaiyat on 23 February1917, Kut on 24 February 1917, Aziziyeh on 27 February 1917 and finally conquered Baghdad on 11 March 1917. General Maude entered into the city at the head of his troops as a victorious commander. Tidings of the capture of Baghdad aroused great enthusiasm, not only throughout the confines of the British Empire but also in all the Allied countries. After this victory, Maude was promoted definitely to the rank of Lieutenant General by the War Cabinet on 12 March 1917. He issued a proclamation to the inhabitants of Baghdad on 19 March 1917. This document, drafted by Sir Mark Sykes in London, pledged that "Our armies do not come into your cities and lands as conquerors or enemies, but as liberators". General Maude who died of cholera on 18 November 1917, is still known as "the Conqueror of Baghdad."
