İkdâmcı Cevdet´in İsviçre Notları Işığında Osmanlı Aydınının Batı Algısı

Sultan III. Selim devrinde başlayan köklü ıslahatların en önemli sonuçlarından birisi Osmanlı Devleti ile Batı arasındaki ilişkilerin toplumsal düzeyde oldukça hızlanmasıdır. Özellikle yurt dışına öğrenci gönderilmeye başlanması ve birçok alanda girişilen modernleşme faaliyetlerini sürdürmek için Batı´dan uzmanların getirtilmesi, söz konusu iki kültür arasındaki alışverişi de farklı bir boyuta taşımıştır. Tanzimat döneminde ortaya çıkan Genç Osmanlılar Batı meselesini farklı bir boyutta ele almış ve ülkenin selametini Osmanlı Devleti´nin Batı tarzında dönüşümünde bulmuşlardır. Tanzimat ve Sultan II. Abdülhamid dönemleri boyunca özellikle muhaliflerin örgütlendiği Batı şehirleri, artık Osmanlı aydınının uğrak yerlerinden biri olmuştur. Batıya seyahat eden ve gördüklerini imtiyaz sahibi olduğu gazetede yayınlayan Osmanlı aydınlarından birisi de İkdamcı Ahmet Cevdet´dir. Makaleye konu olan Cevdet´in yazıları İsviçre seyahati esnasında müşahede ettiklerini anlattığı gazete yazılar. Söz konusu yazılarda Cevdet, İsviçre´yi hemen her yönüyle gözlemlemiş ve Osmanlı Devleti´yle kıyaslamalar yapmıştır. Makalede Cevdet´in gözlemlerinden yola çıkarak Osmanlı ile İsviçre´nin kıyaslanmasının gerçekliği üzerinde durulmuştur. Ayrıca Osmanlı aydının Batıya bakışı eleştirel bir yaklaşımla anlamlandırılmaya çalışılmıştır.

One of the most significant results of the radical reforms that started during the period of Sultan Selim III´s reign is that the relations between the Ottoman Empire and the West gained speed on social level. Especially starting to send students abroad and bringing experts from the West in order to maintain the attempted activities of modernization took the cultural exchange between the two subject cultures to another level. The Young Ottomans who emerged during the Tanzimat Reform Era handled the issue of West in another dimension and found the salvation of Ottoman Empire in Western style transformation. Western cities where especially opponents organized during the Tanzimat and Sultan Abdulhamid II periods were visited frequently by the Ottoman highbrow. One of the Ottoman highbrows who travelled the West and published what he saw in a newspaper of which he was a grant holder was Ikdamci Ahmet Cevdet. Cevdet´s writings which constitutes the subject of the article are the newspaper articles in which he described what he had observed during his journey to Switzerland. Cevdet, in these writings in question, observed Switzerland in almost every aspect and compared her with Ottoman Empire. In this article, the reality of the comparison between Ottoman and Switzerland was emphasized based on Cevdet´s observations. Furthermore, the perception of West by Ottoman highbrow was attempted to interpret with a critical approach.
