Siege and Earthquake: Ağrıboz Castle Repairs (1688-1715)

The castle, which protected the city called Ağrıboz / Eğriboz during the Ottoman period and Chalkis today, was taken from the Venetians by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1470. Over time, the castle became one of the most important centers of the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean. Its location and importance necessitated the constant maintenance of the castle. The most costly repair of the castle, which has been repaired many times from its conquest until it was lost by the Ottoman Empire, is after the Venetian siege. Earthquakes experienced outside the encirclement also affected the castle. The repairs were not only related to fortifications but also included structures such as waterways and arches, mosques, fountains, and buildings. The scope of the repairs and the things that have been done have prepared the ground for the transformation of the castle into an Ottoman structure. The castle, which was destroyed towards the end of the XIXth century, was an important loss in terms of Ottoman and world cultural heritage. In this regard, the repairs of the Ağrıboz Castle from the time of the Venetian siege to 1715 were examined in the light of archive documents. With this study, it is aimed to reveal the importance given to the repair or reconstruction works within the borders of the Ottoman Empire and to determine how it applied them.
