Recruitment Process in the Roman Army in the Imperial Period

One of the main reasons of the rise of Rome which was a relatively ordinary city-state at the beginning, to capture and rule over the large territories in the Mediterranean basin, was its strong armed forces. There were many factors for keeping Roman army strong in both peace and war times. The talent of command echelon, tactics, ability to keep up with the modern developments and their arms and equipment were among the most important reasons for an army to stay strong. On the other hand, one of the main reasons of any armed forces to be successful, is the quality of its soldiers in ancient ages as well as in the modern days. The Roman army was a militia force which was formed when the need arises until the late Republic period, with the reforms of Marius, it became a professional force. In the I and IIth centuries A.D. when the Pax Romana, the Romans did not have any difficulty to find new recruits and could maintain its strength. However, the high standards for recruitment had to be abandoned because of the increasingly frequent military conflicts in the IIIrd century A.D. and the Roman army began to weaken which was one of reasons of the fall of Roman Empire.
