Restorations of the Kayseri Armenian Churches in the Ottoman Archive Documents

In this study, the restorations of Armenian churches in Kayseri during the Ottoman period have been discussed. The documents of the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry, on which the study is based, contain important information about the process of restoration of the Armenian churches. When the dates of the related documents are studied closely, it is possible to see that restoration applications increased starting from 1839 when the Imperial Edict of Reorganization was issued and speeded up with the Edict of Reforms in 1856. With the archive research, applications at various times for the restoration of seven churches have been noticed. Among these churches, which are proofs of the Ottoman tolerance, those of Mother Mary and St Theodore in Talas, and St Theodore in Erkilet, unfortunately, have not survived to the present day. While only the ruins of few walls from the Church of St Theodore in Fenese / Develi have remained, the Churches of St Stephen in Efkere and SS Peter and Paul in Tomarza are mostly, and the Church of St Theodore in Everek is completely intact. From the surveys on the buildings, it is obvious that the restoration requests mentioned in the archive documents were met, sometimes with a delay though. The restoration for the Muslim and non-Muslim shrines were not the same; depending on the documents, it has been established that for the restoration of the non-Muslim ones before the Reforms, the opinion of the Sheikh ul-Islam and later, that of the Ministry of Justice and Religious Sects was sought. According to the related fatwas, affirmative replies were granted on condition that no additions were made to the original buildings.
