Sultanate Regents in the Delhi Turkish Sultanate and Their Effects on Power

The Delhi Turkish Sultanate was ruled between 1206 and 1414 by dynasties, most of which were Turkish, with Delhi being the center of India. In the Delhi Turkish Sultanate, the ruling class did not consist of local people, but the state organization developed on the mamluk system. The presence of the Turks in the specified time period had a substantial impact on the political, military, economic and cultural life of India. In this state, the succession of the sultanate by inheritance was not respected. Therefore, being the new owner of power was very attractive for the amirs/commanders who wanted to be rulers. This understanding of power of the state for the regents of the sultanate, who were in the upper positions of the sultanate and who were mostly the most authoritative after the sultan, made them more eager for power unlike other emirs. In the Delhi Turkish Sultanate, the office of regency was influential from its establishment until the beginning of the fourteenth century, that is, until the Tugluk dynasty. In the Delhi Turkish Sultanate, the regents were powerful emirs with the wide powers their authorities had given them. However, they did not derive their power only from the power given to them by the authority. In this study, we will try to show how and to what extent the regents of the sultanate in the bureaucracy of the Delhi Turkish Sultanate were or could not be effective on the government.
