Yeniçeri Ağası Köse Mehmet Ağa ve Muhallefatı

XVII. Yüzyıl başlarında yeniçeri ocağında yetişen ve ocak ağalığına kadar yükselme başarısı gösteren Köse Mehmet Ağa, Sultan IV. Murat´ın iktidarının sallandığı cülus meselesinde gösterdiği sağlam duruş ile O´nun hayatını kurtarmış hem de tahtta kalmasını sağlamıştır. Ardından bir dönem padişahın sağ kolu olan Köse Mehmet Ağa, tarihimizde iyi bilinen IV. Murat´ın şedit yönetiminin icra amiri olmuştur. Ağa, yaptığı bir hatanın kurbanı olup katledilince, kendisine ait mallar müsadere edilmiştir. Köse Mehmet Ağa´ya ait muhallefât listesinde, sahip olduğu nitelikli mallar Osmanlı Devleti´nin sosyal, kültürel ve iktisadi tarihine ışık tutmaktadır.

Köse Mehmed Agha was raised among the Janissary corps in the beginning of the seventeenth century and he rose to the rank of Agha of the Janissaries. When Sultan Murad IV was threatened to be deposed as the crisis of payment for the accession to the throne (cülûs) got worse, Köse Mehmed Agha saved the Sultan´s life and helped him to stay on the throne as he stood with the Sultan against the Janissaries. In the aftermath, he became a trusted man of Murad IV for a while and carried out Murad´s notorious coercive administration methods. Once Köse Mehmed made a mistake, he was executed and his properties were confiscated. The list of Agha´s high quality possessions indicates that a high-ranking Ottoman officer could easily amass massive wealth but the result of a big mistake in a high office would be fatal.
