An Analysis on the Term "Middle East" and its Boundaries

AN ANALYSIS ON THE TERM "MIDDLE EAST" AND ITS BOUNDARIES ABSTRACT With its geopolitical and geostrategical position, Middle East has been the primary target of Great Powers throughout the history. It is so difficult to define and describe such an important region. Introduced in the late 19th century and early 20th century, the term "Middle East" is of Western origin. This term has been defined in accordance with the political conjuncture and the era in which it was named.The boundaires of Middle east were defined in accordance with the interests of Britain. The position and the characteristics of the region were not taken into consideration. In this plane, Egypt, Turkey, the Arabian Peninsula, the Caucasus are shown within the boundaries of the Middle East. As a result, although Middle East is a Western term, it has been internalized by the people of the region and since then it has been defined in various ways. Its boundaries also changed, breaking the specific geographical limits.

Ortadoğu, sahip olduğu jeopolitik ve Jeostratejik konumu nedeniyle tarih boyunca Büyük Devletlerin birincil hedefi olmuştur. Böylesine önemli bir coğrafyayı tanımlamak ve anlatmak oldukça zordur. 19.yüzyılın sonlarında ve 20. Yüzyılın başlarında kullanılmaya başlanan Ortadoğu, batılı bir kavramdır. Bu kavram adlandırıldığı döneme ve siyasi konjonktüre göre değişik şekillerde tanımlanmıştır. Ortadoğu´nun sınırları ise özellikle İngiltere´nin menfaatleri doğrultusunda belirlenmiştir. Bu sınırlamada bölgenin konumu ve özellikleri dikkate alınmamıştır. Bu düzlemde Mısır, Türkiye, Arap Yarımadası, Kafkaslar vs. Ortadoğu sınırları içinde gösterilmiştir. Sonuç olarak Ortadoğu, batılı bir kavram olmasına karşın bölge halkı tarafından benimsenmiş ve geçmişten günümüze yaygın olarak çeşitli şekillerde tanımlanmıştır. Aynı doğrultuda sınırları da değişiklik göstermiş, belli bir coğrafya sınırlamasına sahip olmamıştır.
