An Ottoman Spy or an Imposter? Activities of Dr. Colonel Abdullah Yusuf in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Indonesia

With the invasion policies of the colonial states towards Muslim sultanates in South and Southeast Asia, the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and local sultanates in the region was peaked from the last quarter of the nineteenth century to the first years of the twentieth century. Of course, the main factor in the formation of these intense relations was the policy of Pan-Islamism because the Ottoman Empire gave more importance to these lands, which it saw as one of the application areas of the Pan-Islamism policy against the occupying states. In such a period, the emergence of a man named Colonel Dr. Abdullah Yusuf, who introduced himself as a spy of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, and his activities in the region on behalf of the Ottoman Empire, caused a diplomatic crisis between the Ottoman Empire and the colonial states in the Malay World. In the end of his activities in Indonesia, caused to rise the tension between the Ottoman Sultan and the Queen of the Netherlands. It is understood that before he came to Indonesia, he was being investigated by both colonial states and Ottoman consuls due to his swindle activities in India, Sri Lanka, Japan and Singapore, but he could not be arrested. After his long escape route, this person, who was finally seen on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, got involved in big business, even affected the course of the war between the Jambi Sultanate and the Dutch military units in the region. The main purpose of this study is to seek an answer to the question of whether this person was indeed an Ottoman spy or an Imposter.

Güney ve Güneydoğu Asya´da meydana gelen kolonyal devletlerin işgalleri sonucunda, on dokuzuncu yüzyılın son çeyreği ve yirminci yüzyılın ilk yılları arasında Osmanlı Devleti ve bölge Sultanlıkları arasında ciddi ilişkiler kurulmuştu. Tabi bu yoğun ilişkilerin meydana gelmesindeki asıl etken, Osmanlı Devleti´nin Pan-İslamism politikasının birer uygulama sahası olarak gördüğü bu topraklara daha fazla önem vermesindendir. Böylesine hassas bir dönemde, kendisini Sultan II. Abdülhamid´in bir ajanı olarak tanıtan Doktor Miralay Abdullah Yusuf isminde birinin çıkagelmesi ve bu bölgelerde Osmanlı Devleti adına faaliyetlerde bulunması sonucunda, Osmanlı Devleti ile bölgedeki kolonyal devletlerarasında bir takım siyasi krizlerin çıkmasına sebep oldu. Onun özellikle Endonezya´daki faaliyetleri sonucunda, Osmanlı Sultanı ve Hollanda Kraliçesi arasında tansiyonun yükselmesine sebep olmuş ve bir diplomatik krizin eşiğinden dönülmüştü. Bu şahıs Endonezya´ya gelmeden önce, Hindistan, Sri Lanka, Japonya ve Singapur´da bulunduğu ve buralarda karıştığı çeşitli faaliyetler sebebiyle gerek kolonyal devletler tarafından gerekse de Osmanlı bürokratları tarafından arandığını ancak bir türlü yakalanamadığı anlaşılmaktadır. Bu uzun kaçış güzergâhının ardından nihayet Endonezya´nın Sumatra adasındaki Jambi Sultanlığının sınırları dâhilinde görülen bu şahsın burada boyundan büyük işlere karışmasıyla bölgede seyreden savaşın gidişatını dahi değiştirmiş oldu. Bu çalışmadaki temel amaç, bu kişinin gerçekten de bir Osmanlı ajanı mı yoksa bir sahtekâr mı olduğu sorusuna cevap aramak olmuştur.
