9-17. Yüzyıl Kaynaklarına Göre Hazar Denizi Çevresinde Neft (Petrol) Üretimi ve Ticareti
Modern dönemlerin vazgeçilmez enerji kaynaklarından olan petrol ürünleri, aslında insanlığın binlerce yıldır istifade ettiği kaynaklar arasında yer alır. Ortadoğu´da özellikle Mezopotamya bölgesinde hidrokarbon kaynaklarının kullanıldığına ilişkin veriler Neolitik devirden bile önceki dönemlere aittir. Hazar Denizi çevresindeki petrolün varlığı da Mezopotamya gibi Milat´tan önceki asırlardan itibaren bilinmektedir. Dünya´da bir benzeri olmayan Hazar´ın deniz ya da göl olduğu hususundaki tartışmalar bölgedeki kaynakların tarihi kadar eskidir. Grek coğrafyacılarının yanı sıra Mesudî ve Kâtip Çelebi gibi İslam yazarlarının eserlerinde Hazar´ın bu hususu tartışılmıştır. Özellikleri yüzyıllardır tartışılan Hazar´ın önemli bir hususu ise sahip olduğu enerji kaynaklarıdır. Grek ve Alban kaynakları gibi 9. yüzyıldan itibaren İslam kaynaklarında Hazar Denizi´nin batı sahillerinde neft adı verilen petrolün yaygın olarak kullanıldığı ve ticaretinin yapıldığına ilişkin veriler mevcuttur.

Naphtha (Petroleum) Production and its Trade around the Caspian Sea According to 9th - 17th Century Sources
Petroleum products, which are one of the irrevocable energy resources of modern times, are actually among the resources that humanity has been benefiting for thousands of years. The data related to use of hydrocarbon resources especially in the Middle East, in Mesopotamia, belong to the ages even before the Neolithic age. Just like Mesopotamia, the existence of petroleum around the Caspian Sea is known as from the centuries Before Christ. The disputes whether the Caspian, an incomparable water body in the world, is a lake or a sea are as old as the sources of this region. Besides the Greek geologists, the Caspian Sea has been discussed in the works of the Islamic writers, such as Mesudî and Kâtip Celebi. The oil-rich sources of the Baku coast took place in the historical sources as much as the geographical features of the Caspian. Along with the Greek and Alban sources there is information in the Islamic sources beginning from the 9th century related to the wide use and trading of petrol called "neft" in the Caspian region.
