Avrupalı Seyyahların Tasvirlerinde Gümüşhane ve Çevresi
Osmanlı coğrafyasının diğer bölgeleri gibi, Gümüşhane ve çevresi de başta Almanlar olmak üzere birçok Avrupalı´nın alakasını fazlasıyla çekmiştir. Gerek Gümüşhane´nin Trabzon-Tebriz ticaret yolu üzerinde bulunması ve gerekse gümüş madeni yatakları bakımından zengin olması, buraya olan alakanın başlıca nedenleri olarak gösterilebilir. Bu çalışma kapsamında, Prusya´nın Trabzon Konsolosu Otto von Blau, H. Barth, Carl Ritter ve Kölnische Zeitung´un muhabiri olmak üzere sadece dört farklı seyyahın 1858-1896 yılları arasında yayınlamış oldukları hatıratları ele alınmıştır. Adı geçen seyyahlar hâricinde bir Carl Ritter´nın çalışmasında belirttiği İngiliz ve Fransız seyyahlar da aynı şekilde bölge hakkında izlenimlerini kaleme almışlardır. Makalemizde bunların da tespitlerine yer verilmiştir.

The Observation of European Travelers on Gumushane and its Surroundings
Gümüşhane and its environs,like in the other part of the empire, attracted attention of western travelers especially the Germans. Its geographical position in the transit route between Trabzon-Tebriz and the rich silver mines in this region were the main reasons of this attention. In this study, accounts of four traveler, Otto von Blau, the Prussian consul in Trabzon, H. Barth Carl Ritter and reporter of Kölnische Zeitung between 1858- 1896 were studied. In the accounts of these travelers, vivid description of Gümüşhane and its environs, the position of the transit route in this region, khans and hangars are made. The location of the city and its appearance, orcharding activities in the city are the other topic of the travelers. The also emphasized on the silver mines in the region and the population of the city. According to their account, the most part of the population were the Armenian contrary to the real demographic knowledges
