Dicle-Fırat´ta Geleneksel Nehir Taşımacılığı ve I. Dünya Savaşı´nda Irak Cephesinde Kullanımı

Bu çalışmanın amacı Dicle ve Fırat nehirlerinde geleneksel usullerle yapılan taşımacılığı tanıtmak ve 1. Dünya Savaşı´nda Irak cephesindeki Osmanlı kuvvetlerinin nakliyat işlerinde üstlendiği rolü tespit etmektir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda adı geçen nehirlerin nakliyat açısından öne çıkan özelliklerine yer verilmiş, varlığını nerdeyse hiç değişmeden binlerce yıl devam ettirebilmiş kelek ve şahtur gibi basit ama işlevsel nehir taşıtlarının imali ve kullanımı hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Nehir taşımacılığının askerî ve ticarî açıdan taşıdığı değer, tarihsel süreç içerisinde ele alınarak geleneksel nehir taşıtlarının teknolojik gelişmelere meydan okurcasına modern çağın büyük savaşında asker, erzak, silah ve mühimmat sevkiyatında üstlendiği önemli görevler analiz edilmiştir.

The purpose of this study is to present the traditional transportation methods on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and determine the role of Ottoman forces in transport business in Iraq front during World War I. In accordance with this aim, the prominent features of the above-mentioned rivers in terms of transportation will be introduced and the details on production and usage of simple but functional river transportation vehicles, which have remained almost unchanged since ancient times, like kelek (A raft made of inflated skins, used since ancient times on the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers) and şahtur (A type of Ottoman tender ship) will be set forth. Moreover, it will be examined, in historical context, the importance of river transportation and the unabated role that kelek and şahtur had, challenging the technological advancements, in military logistics in the Great Battle of modern ages.
